Oscars statuettes from ’30s, ’40s auctioned in LA (AP)

AP – Fifteen Academy Awards statuettes from the 1930s and ’40s, including the Best Screenplay Oscar given to Herman Mankiewicz for “Citizen Kane,” have been sold at a Los Angeles auction.

Michel Hazanavicius wins directing Oscar for "The Artist"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Frenchman Michel Hazanavicius won the Oscar for best directing on Sunday for “The Artist,” a homage to Hollywood’s silent era that starred the filmmaker’s wife. The silent, black-and-white movie which also took the best picture award focuses on a fading star who finds redemption through the love of a woman just as silent movies are being taken over by talkies. It was Hazanavicius’ first Oscar nomination and his first win.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Jean Dujardin won the best actor Oscar on Sunday for silent film “The Artist,” becoming the first Frenchman to win the coveted accolade and beating out Hollywood frontrunners George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Meryl Streep takes third career Oscar

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Meryl Streep, who holds the record with 17 for the most Academy Award nominations by any actor, won the Oscar for best lead actress on Sunday for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.” It was Streep’s third Academy Award, but her first since winning the Oscar for “Sophie’s Choice” in 1982. She was also honored for the 1979 film “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and had long been considered overdue for another Academy Award
